Winter Basics Refresh.

I have felt totally blah the past week when it’s come to everyday dressing. I don’t want to wear any of my jeans, sweaters, or tees; I’m tired of my boots and sneakers; and I generally feel uninspired. This happens to me usually once or twice a season because I tend to buy statement pieces that excite me, but that I’m disinclined to wear more than once a week, and I generally neglect the “basics” that should form a tried-and-true uniform. Right now, I am very drawn to black and white basics I can mix and match and glitz up with accessories for weekday. I’m also super into cropped flares? I have been eyeing this pair from ASKK NY and then found these VERY similar ones at Gap and had to order! Below, all the items I wish I had waiting for me in my closet ATM, some of which I had to purchase this week!

I also like cropped flares (madewell cali Demi boot) but struggle with styling them in winter! My preference is to wear with either sneakers, flat sandals, or loafers. No socks. But it is already too cold for no socks, and I’m stumped re: booties. I just bought a pair of flat Chelsea boots from Thursday and they look…ok. I feel like maybe there should be space between the hem and the top of the bootie? Or could I wear my knee high riding boots?? Sometimes I just wear with sneakers and warm, randomly patterned socks, bc ain’t nobody got time to be cold! But I’d prefer to feel more stylish than eccentric. I’m confined to flat footwear due to annoying foot problems. Any tips? I feel stuck in skinny jeans until the weather turns again!

Ps – I liked the gap flares, but I cannot WAIT until the high-rise trend is done! The 11” rise is doing me no favors.

Hi Stephanie! I feel like I could have written this myself as I find myself having the same dilemma with my Madewell Cali demi-boot jeans! I usually wear flats with mine too since I also have finicky feet. Honestly because of those same challenges you mentioned I just take a break from them in the colder months! However, with some cropped/ankle length wide leg trousers I go for booties that have more of a sock-like shape around the ankles (no space between hem and the top) — I think I read this tip from Jean (Extra Petite blog). But for some reason this same shoe doesn’t look right with demi-boot jeans, on me at least.

I have a short torso and the 11″ rise doesn’t do me any favors either! I feel like the waist goes up to my ribcage. I imagine this is what corsets feel like, haha! I prefer 9.5-10″.

Ha, yes no super low rise either! I’m just nostalgic for the days when 9” was marketed as “high-rise.”

I’m glad I’m not the only one, Mia! Yes, 9.5” is my favorite rise as well. Thanks for the tip on the sock-booties – I had forgotten about the Extra Petite blog! I think straight leg and crop flares are still “new” enough to me that I’m just not confident what looks “right” styled with them. But as a 40-something, I find myself caring less about what looks right and just wearing whatever I feel like! See above re: eccentric socks 😉
